Youjo Senki enters its third episode as things get even rougher for the loli who dares challenge kami-sama.
The first half or so shows Tanya being sent to the rear only to work as a lab rat to test out the new technology her country is developing. It’s a big step forward for the nation and an exciting moment for the scientists, but for Tanya it’s something completely different. The newly developed crystals are highly unstable and keep blowing up. This isn’t kind of life Tanya wanted in the rear.
Despite the persistence of the scientist in charge, Tanya manages to somehow inform her superiors about how big a failure the experiments are turning out to be and how she wants to be transferred. It appears that she may have succeeded in getting her way, that is, until she is called in for some more testing the next day.
Just when things couldn’t get worse for Tanya, this new magic crystal goes out of control and is about to blow up. How to stop it? Praise the Lord.
This is all an elaborate attempt by Being X to force Tanya into believing. Gods are considered to be omnipotent beings with powers beyond comprehension. Being X is using his powers to pull quite a lot of strings and force Tanya into a corner where she will have to ask for divine assistance. He has ended up being successful in making Tanya praise him, which we had seen in the first episode too, but that’s not enough make this twisted loli a true believer.
Tanya doesn’t like this, of course, but she has no other choice. Being X has pulled too many wires as this new magic crystal can only be used by her and it gives quite a magic boost so she can’t ditch it either. Being X wins this round, but Tanya isn’t going to give up any time soon; it’ll take more than this to bring this stubborn little girl to her knees.
Another thing we see here is that Tanya has an image to keep up. While she couldn’t care less about this country and those in it, including her subordinates, she has to maintain the facade of a patriotic soldier who cares about those under her command. She gives Viktoriya an offer to serve in the rear instead of the front lines. It’s a good offer and Viktoriya won’t end up dying or anything. The purpose behind this is simply to keep a good image in the eyes of those around her.
The episode ends with us seeing another doing of Being X where an army general is about to decide on sending Tanya in as a member of a new rapid response unit. This obviously means that she’ll be sent to the front lines once again. Since this unit is pretty important and she’s an ace, she won’t be able to get out of it.
One thing we see here is that some things tend to come off as quite funny even though they’re probably not meant to be so. They’re not the type of jokes one would expect from a comedy anime, but they mostly stem from the awkward or unexpected situations Tanya ends up in where she has to keep up her image and also not let people know that she’s actually a middle-aged man from another dimension.
We’re starting to see where this is all headed. Tanya will be pushed to her limit by kami-sama as we see her being involved in many important parts of the ongoing war. It’ll be interesting to see how long Tanya manages to keep this stubborn attitude of hers.
Another entertaining episode with an unexpected kind of comedy and some nice progression. Tanya doesn’t know what’s coming her way after this seemingly peaceful time in military college.
