Grimoire of Zero is back to its usual self as the Mercenary and friends start to execute their plan to end the war.
The reason behind the war is sorcery, and Zero’s magic being used in the wrong way only made things worse. In this episode they use previously introduced concepts to construct a plan which is very much possible in theory. This is what Grimoire of Zero should have done with its earlier revelations.
Back when Albus met Zero and the Mercenary in the first episode, she tried to use some fire magic spell on them which was revoked by Zero. They use this in their plan to end the war. Since Zero is the inventor of magic, she can deny any spell, and Albus wants to have Zero deny magic across the entire Kingdom through the construction of a giant magic circle.
But for this plan to be put into action, they must release Zero from Thirteen’s clutches. For this they use a technique seen back in the second episode. The old lady from the village tracked down the group using some of the Mercenary’s fur. Albus plans on using this same method to find Zero. And the thing of Zero they will use is her battered up robe which they had given to that perverted shopkeeper in episode three.
Grimoire of Zero uses these three small things it showed earlier, which most would have ignored as unimportant things. It should have done something like this with the big reveals of Thirteen and Albus’ identities. What it’s done here is great.
The Mercenary takes off to save his princess from her tall secluded tower while Albus and Wolf man go to construct their magic circle.
Here we see how stubborn everyone is with their stance; no one is willing to budge an inch at all. Albus tells her idea to the Sorcerers who come for her, but they all deem her a traitor thanks to the mysterious man. This is a good chance to end all the fighting, but taking this route will mean that the witches have lost and they don’t want that. They take Albus and Wolf face into custody and they will be judged most likely by the mysterious man, which means that we might see his face soon enough.
We also see how Zero constantly tells Thirteen that her travel companion is perfect for everything; from cooking food for her to being a bed for her, nothing Thirteen gives her can replace that furry Mercenary he drove away. The Mercenary is climbing a cliff and then a wall to reach Zero. We’ve said this before too that despite seemingly having a fight, the two do want to get back together.
This has been a fine Grimoire of Zero episode with how they used previously shown events in devising the big plan. We also got some decent enough animation here. The running animation in the last episode was terrible and they somewhat make up for that with some better looking running. The Mercenary throwing Albus scene looked good too. There are some comedic moments interspersed between the serious moments but they don’t really ruin anything and are quite amusing too.
All in all, this is a massive improvement on Grimoire of Zero’s part and it gives us what we should have gotten before in those two revelation parts of the show. The Mercenary will meet his employer next week and it looks like Thirteen will be up to something there.
This was one of the show’s best episodes to date, even without much action. Watch the most interesting (in more ways than one) scene below:
